Dr. Don Richard Askren

A celebration of life will take place at his residence, 2853 E. St. Rd. 28 on July 4th from 5-9pm.  Family and friends are invited.  Fireworks will follow.

 

Dr. Don Richard Askren, 89 of Tipton died at 2:15 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at Community Hospital, Anderson.  He was born on July 8, 1923 in Tipton to Charles & Mary (Small) Askren.   He married Betty Jo Porter on December 22, 1950 after proposing to her on their third date, and she survives.

Don graduated from Tipton High School in 1941 and served in the infantry during WW II.  He finished I.U. Medical School in three years and graduated  from Lincoln Chiropractic College in 1961.  He worked as a chiropractor in Tipton for many years.  Don was the former owner of Tipton University College of Cosmetology.  He was a Mason and a Shriner, serving as president of the Shiner's Club for seven years. 

Don was an accomplished pianist and entertained many.  He collected classic cars and enjoyed traveling around the world with his wife Betty Jo.  Hawaii was always his favorite place to visit.  He truly enjoyed his home.  He loved to garden and landscape, and he particularly enjoyed entertaining around his swimming pool, the place where most of his nieces and nephews learned to swim.

He is survived by his wife Betty Jo, a brother, Max Askren, and a sister, Sherry Conaway and husband Kenneth.  Don was preceded in death by two brothers, George and Charles and a sister, Marjorie.

A private memorial service will be held at his home at a later date.  Young-Nichols Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
