Gretchen Cardwell

Gretchen Cardwell, 99 of Tipton died at 7:05 a.m. on Thursday, December 25, 2014 at her residence.  She was born in Tipton on March 11, 1915 to Earnest A. & Murrel P. (Moore) Foster. 

Gretchen graduated from Tipton High School in 1932 as the class valedictorian.  From 1959-1965 she was Assistant Principal at Windfall High School.  She later worked as a trust officer of a local bank, retiring in 1990.  Gretchen was a member of Windfall Christian Church and the Eastern Star.  She belonged to the Bridge Club and Tipton County Historical Society and loved researching genealogy.

She is survived by one daughter, Sara Nancy (Cardwell) Johnston of Maryland and one son, Roger Anthony Cardwell of Tipton; one brother, George Lee Foster, Tipton; four grandchildren, David Richard Johnston, Clara Anne Stafford, Jody (Johnston) Shekan  and Edna Faye Johnston; 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. 

Gretchen was preceded in death by one son-in-law, Charles Johnston, one sister-in-law, Margaret Foster, Sara Nancy and Roger's father, Clifton Elbert Cardwell of Windfall, and a special friend of several years, Don Essig of Tipton.

Gretchen's funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 3 at Young-Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. Carl Roudebush presiding.  Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 10:00-11:30 a.m. Saturday.
