Viola H. Hughes

Viola H. Hughes, 91, Tipton, and formerly of Indianapolis and Joplin, Missouri, died at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at Tipton Hospital.  She was born June 29, 1918 in Picher, Oklahoma to Bert Henry & Vina A. (Comstock) Sampson.  On December 12, 1945 she married Lyle W. Hughes and he preceded her in death on November 28, 1992.

She was a bookkeeper and had worked for the Pension Fund Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).  Viola was a former member of Northwood Christian Church in Indianapolis, and was a member of West Street Christian Church and Leah Circle.  She had also attended Kemp United Methodist Church.

Viola was a long-time volunteer for the Relay for Life since its inception in Tipton County. She was a volunteer for the Friends of the Library and a member of the Tipton Hospital Auxiliary.

Viola is survived by two daughters, Christie Ann Bowman and husband Charles, Tipton, and Mary Beth Clarke and husband Kevin, Pendleton, and four grandchildren, Emily Bowman, Andrew Bowman, Allison Clarke and Nathan Clarke.

Her funeral will be at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, December 20 at Young-Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. John Hinant and Rev. Linda McKiernan-Allen presiding.  Private family burial will be in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, Indianapolis. Visitation will be from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
