Barbara A. King

Barbara A. King, 84 of Indianapolis died Monday,  March 3, 2014 at her residence.  She was born September 1, 1929 in Boston, Massachusetts to Albert & Hilda (Ings) Johnson.  She was the oldest of six children with two sisters, Marjorie Beihold, Indianapolis, and Carol Dieffenbach, Cohasset, Mass. and three brothers, Fred Johnson of Haymarket, Virginia, David Johnson, Boston and Stephen Johnson who preceded her in death in 1980.  She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

As a young girl during World War II, Barbara participated in the spotting and reporting of aircraft, having taken classes toward learning to distinguish friendly from enemy aircraft.  She graduated from Roslindale High School in Boston in 1946.  Among other jobs she worked as a missionary, photographer, writer and editor of a newsletter and on support staff at MIT in Boston.

Barbara married William Burton King in October 1953 and moved to Los Angeles. Her husband preceded her in death on December 18, 1980.  She returned to Boston to help care for her parents and brother David, where she lived until 1999.  She then moved to Crestwood Village Apartments in Indianapolis in November 1999, where she lived until the time of her death.

Barbara traveled extensively, visiting Germany, England, Sweden, Peru and many other places.  She had a special love for all people and animals and was appreciated by her many relatives and friends for her kindness.  She played the accordion for many special needs groups.

Funeral services for Barbara will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 6 at Young-Nichols Funeral Home in Tipton with Pastor Kevin Carr presiding.  Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service Thursday at the funeral home.
