Philip V. Nichols

Philip V. Nichols, 77 of Tipton died at 4:11 p.m. Thursday, April 5, 2012 at his residence.   He was born September 26, 1934 in Elwood to Robert F. & Evelyn (Vance) Nichols.  On August 25, 1956 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Tipton he married Mary Alice Kinder.  She preceded him in death on July 8, 2009.

Phil was a funeral director and the owner of Young-Nichols Funeral Home in Tipton.  He was the current Tipton County Coroner, serving in his sixth term in that position and was a former president of the Indiana Coroner's Association. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, a Past Exaulted Ruler of the Tipton Elks Lodge and a Director of the Elks National Bowling Association.

Phil was a graduate of Tipton High School in the Class of 1952; received his BS in Business from Indiana University in 1956 and was a graduate of the Indiana College of Mortuary Science.  He was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity.  Phil served on the finance committees at both the Tipton County Foundation and the Sisters of St. Joseph.  He served on the Board of Directors of the former Tipton Building & Loan Association, was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and was a member of the Tipton County Historical Society. He was one of the first EMT's in Tipton County.  Phil enjoyed golf and bowling and traveling the world with Mary Alice.

Survivors include one daughter, Lynn N. Hall and husband Chris, Madison, Indiana; three sons, Bob Nichols and wife Teri, Tipton, Brad Nichols and wife Christine, Tipton, and Mike Nichols and wife Diann, Hartford City, Indiana; one sister, Nan Nichols, Wooster, Ohio.

Phil also had fourteen grandchildren, Nathan, Nicholas, and Noah Hall, Aaron, Thomas, and David Nichols, Emily, Lindsay, and Philip Nichols, Khaila Lay, Kinsey Nichols, Emily, Cameron, and Kyle Orr;  six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

His funeral will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 11 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Tipton, with Rev. Leroy Kinnaman presiding.  Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 2:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday at Young-Nichols Funeral Home.
