Philip J. "Joe" Schmith

Philip J. "Joe" Schmith, 80, Carmel, died Tuesday, May 15, 2007 at St. Vincent Hospice in Indianapolis. He was born May 9, 1927 in Indianapolis to Philip A. & Esther (Huron) Schmith.  On June 17, 1950 he married Kathryn Edwards and she survives. He had lived in Tipton for 62 years, Indianapolis for 2 1/2 years, Norfolk, Virginia for 2 years and Sun City, Florida for 14 years.

He retired in 1992 as the president of Citizens National Bank in Tipton.  Joe was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Prince of Peace and our Lady of Mt. Carmel. He was a life member of the Elks Lodge.  He had served on the Tipton Utility Service Board, Tipton County Memorial Hospital Association Board and the construction committee for expansion of Tipton Municipal Golf Course. Joe had also been on the Agriculture Committee of the Indiana Bankers Association and had served in the U.S. Navy.

Survivors besides his wife Katy include two sons and one daughter, Tom Schmith and his wife Jody, Mary Ann Keck and her husband Rich, and Jim Schmith and his wife Kelli, all of Carmel; eight grandchildren, Renee Schmith Phares and her husband Tim, Jamie Schmith, Elizabeth Keck Kissel and her husband Jay, Joe Keck, Ross Keck, Brian Schmith, Jenna Schmith and Joe H. Schmith; one great-grandson, Ty Phares.

His funeral will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 18 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 340 Mill Street, Tipton, with Rev. Gerald Borawski presiding.  Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday at Young-Nichols Funeral Home, Tipton.
