William E. Smith

William E. Smith, 85, 407 Fairview Avenue, Tipton, died at 9:55 a.m. Monday, September 25, 2006 at Autumnwood Extended Care. He was born August 30, 1921 in Tipton County to Glen H. & Sarah Hinkle Smith.  On April 5, 1941 he married Margery I. Thompson and she survives.

He was a lifelong farmer and for 30 years he and his wife operated Smith's Antiques in Tipton County.  He was a member of the West St. Christian Church.  Bill graduated from Goldsmith High School in 1939.  He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed hunting. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII.

Together Bill and Marge spent 26 winters in Florida.  After they returned to Tipton fulltime, Bill began making Nantucket baskets.  At one time his baskets were on display at the Tipton Library.  He made over 50 baskets in various sizes before becoming ill.

Survivors include his wife Margery; one daughter, Judy Phillipe and husband Dick, Tipton; one son, Bill Smith and wife Gwen, Tipton; two brothers, Jack A. Smith and Robert N. Smith, both of Tipton; five grandchildren, Tammy Watson, Todd Shuck, Tom Shuck, Tandy Waddick and Talene Welch; 12 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

His funeral will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 28 at Young-Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. Janice Burns-Watson.  Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Tipton.  Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
