Garnet Edward Thornton

Garnet Edward Thornton, 89, Tipton, died at 7:03 p.m. Wednesday, August 2, 2006 at Tipton Hospital.

Born June 6, 1917, in Hamilton County he was the son of Ray and Chloie (Simmons) Thornton.  He was a graduate of Goldsmith High School and attended agricultural continuing education through Purdue University.

He married (Velma) Jean Overdorf on May 23, 1941 and She survives.

A veteran of W.W. II, he served in Europe in the United States Army Air Corp., Infantry Division. 

He was retired from farming and from Chrysler Corporation, Kokomo, where he worked in quality control.

He was a member of Odd Fellows Lodge, Ekin, the American Legion, U.A.W., Central Indiana Horseshoe Pitching Assoc., and the East Union Christian Church.

Surviving with his wife are two daughters, Linda J. Foster (Dr. Cletis), Zionsville, IN, and Susan D. Wall (Mike) Cumming, GA, and a son Robert M. Thornton (Donna), Lakeland, FL.  Also surviving are grandchildren, Jennifer Gaither (Chad), Carmel, Christopher R. Foster, Indianapolis, Matthew C. Wall and Emily D. Wall, Cumming, GA, Dylan and Austin Jones, Lakeland, FL, and one Great Granddaughter, Holyn Elizabeth Gaither.  He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family, his "family" from the St. Joseph Center, and his loving caregivers.  He was preceded in death by one sister, Alice Geraldine Krewson.

He loved pitching horseshoes, watching all sports, traveling to Florida, and being with his family.

His funeral will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 5, at Young-Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. Rex Dunning and Rev. James Thurston presiding and burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Tipton. Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
