Sister Ruth Whalen

Sister Ruth Whalen (Rosemary Whalen), 93, Tipton, died at 9:45 p.m. Saturday October 11, 2008 at the St. Joseph Center in Tipton. She was born on February 24, 1916 in Wabash, Indiana to Edward and Iva (Mills) Whalen.

In 1934, Sister Ruth graduated from St. Joseph Academy and entered the community of the Sisters of St. Joseph the same year.  She earned her Bachelors Degree in English from Indiana State University, Terre Haute, Indiana; Sister Ruth also earned her MALS in Library Science from Rosary College, River Forest, Illinois, and her Archives Credentials from Bergamo Center, Dayton, Ohio.

As a grade school teacher Sister Ruth taught in Tipton, South Bend, Marion, Crawfordsville, Winamac, Portland, and Delphi. She was the Librarian and taught English in the St. Joseph Junior College and St. Joseph Academy in Tipton, Indiana. Sister Ruth also served on the Community Administration Board for eight years, she also organized the archives and served as the archivist for the past fifteen years.

Sister Ruth was preceded in death by her parents and one sister Leontine Whalen.

Sister's funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 15 at the St. Joseph Center with burial to follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.  A Wake Service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday at the center with visitation to follow.
