Ruth Wimer

Ruth Wimer, 106, Carmel, and a former Tipton resident, died at 6:40 a.m. Sunday, February 7, 2010 at Summer Trace in Carmel. She was born February 9, 1903 in Tipton County, the eldest daughter of William A. & Emma (Meyer) Wimer.

A life-long member of Emanuel Lutheran Church, she graduated from Blakers College and Indiana State University, with graduate work at the Universities of Michigan, Wisconsin and Indiana.  She taught Home Economics in Frankton and Kempton, was 4-H Club leader in Madison County for three summers, Home Demonstration Agent in Madison County for six years and in Tipton County for 25 years.

Ruth held membership in county, state and national professional organizations.  For several years she served on the board of directors of the Tipton County Housing Corporation and was secretary for several years.  She assisted with the reorganization of the Tipton County Historical Society, served as president for three terms, and on the board of directors and the building committee.  She was the Associate Editor for the history book Tipton County: Her Land and People, which was published in 1976.

She received distinguished awards from the National Home Demonstration Agents Association, Purdue University and the Indiana Historical Society.

Ruth is survived by nieces and nephews, Betty Jo (Wimer) Beever, Tipton, Carol Ann (Wimer) Svane, Michigan, David Schulenburg, Ft. Wayne, Indiana, Jerry Schulenburg, Noblesville, Indiana and Diane (Schulenburg) Schumacher, Arizona.  She was preceded in death by one brother, Raymond Wimer, and one sister, Dorotha Mae (Wimer) Schulenburg.

Her funeral will be at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, February 11 at the Emanuel Lutheran Church, 1385 S. St. Rd. 19, Tipton, with Rev. Robb Roloff presiding.  Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Tipton.  Visitation will be from 3:00-7:00 p.m. Wednesday at Young-Nichols Funeral Home, Tipton, and from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Thursday at the church.
