Edward Gutierrez

September 13, 1965 — November 1, 2021

Ed Gutierrez, age 56, passed away November 1, 2021 after suffering a sudden pulmonary embolism. He was surrounded by the love and comfort of his children and family. Ed was born on September 13, 1965 in Tipton to Rodolfo and Maria Gutierrez who survive.

If you knew Ed growing up, you were familiar with his memorable smile, laugh and generally ornery, fun-spirited demeanor. He was raised in Tipton, played sports from the moment he could and never stopped. At Tipton High School he played football, basketball and ran track, as well as participating in mixed choir, yearbook, and any other excuse to get out of an actual classroom.

After graduating in 1984, Ed joined the U.S. Navy on the “buddy system” with his best friend Darrin Legg, and they ventured on to boot camp in San Diego California and their futures together on May 25, 1984. After boot camp, Ed was trained for flight deck handling, fire, fuel, and damage control and was stationed on the USS Belleau Wood LHA3 in San Diego, California. He was a very proud Navy man and aircraft handler, always. His “brothers” on the Belleau Wood were always near to his heart; that didn’t end with his enlistment that concluded in 1988.

Ed married Angie Bayliff, a girl he met being his outgoing, funny self in the back row of math class in 1986, and was blessed with his children Allison in 1993 and Sam in 1998, who survive him. They were, without question, the light of his world. He loved playing, watching Andy Griffith, coaching them in sports, cheering them on, and bragging about them… a talent he honed until the day he passed.

Ed was a huge Notre Dame Football fan and knowledgeable rock music connoisseur. He was part owner in an expedite delivery service “Beaver’s Gopher Service” for 11 years, worked at Pepsi for several years, JW Marriott and various other places while residing in the Indianapolis area since 2011. He has been involved in the Recovery Circle, Veteran Circle and was an usher on the Go Team at ITown Church, as well as various AA and Vet to Vet groups in Indianapolis.

Survivors besides his parents Rodolfo and Maria Gutierrez of Tipton include his brothers Rich Gutierrez of Elwood, Jerry Gutierrez of Indianapolis, and his sister Veronica Crews of Tipton. He also left behind his niece, Olivia Crews, and dozens of extended family members within the Gutierrez, Mireles and Bayliff families.

The family will have a private celebration of life in his honor at a future date. Young-Nichols Funeral Home is honored to be assisting the Gutierrez family at this difficult time.
