Lester Lockard, 94 of Tipton passed away at 2:20 a.m. on Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at Miller’s Merry Manor in Tipton. He was born on March 11, 1924 in Wolf County, Kentucky to Andy & Bertha (Graham) Lockard.

Lester attended Mount Carmel High School, Kentucky Mountain Bible College, Marion College (now Indiana Wesleyan) and Ball State University. He served with the Army Air Corps during WWII as a radio operator on a B-17 bomber stationed in England. His most memorable experience was participation in Operation Chowhound – dropping food packages to the people in Holland.

Lester pastored Wesleyan churches in Marion, Lafayette and Elwood. He then began a career in education as an elementary principal in Auburn, Indiana. After two years, he started teaching sixth-grade math in Tipton.

While teaching in Tipton he met and married Barbara Harrison. They spent 47 years together. Both retired from teaching in 1988 and enjoyed 30 years of gardening, fishing and traveling.

Lester is survived by his wife Barbara and son Doug; sisters, Edith and Mildred and one brother, Doug. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Hector, Orval, Jess, Londo and one sister, Maude.

A memorial service for Lester will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 27 at Trinity Wesleyan Church, 3021 W. State Road 28, Tipton, with Pastor Johnnie Blair presiding.  Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. prior to the service.

Private burial will be in Fairview Cemetery at a later date.  Young-Nichols Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Wesleyan Church or the Kemp United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 228 N. Main Street, Tipton, Indiana, 46072.

    So many fond memories with Mr Lockard. He was a wonderful neighbor and educator. I was thrilled to share my 6th grade year iat Jefferson School in a portable classroom. Barb and Doug my thoughts are with you both.

  3. So sorry to hear of the loss of Mr Lockard. I had him for math in 6th grade and I will always remember how he would teach us multiples of 5 and 7. I used the same Buzz Fizz game for teaching my kids. He was a wonderful man and an excellent teacher. My heart goes out to his family

    Dear Barb- Sorry for your loss of Lester. Mom and Dad (LaKeita and Phil) always had a lot of fun spending the winters together down in Gulf Shores (even my visit there in 2001 was quite a memorable one for me!). Wishing you the best and the comfort of friends and family during this sad time.

    I am sorry to hear of Mr. Lockard’s passing. Even though it has been many years since I was in his 6th grade math class I think the 1st year he came to Jefferson School to teach. He was a very good teacher & I enjoyed his class.

    Lester and Lingle were our first neighbors in the Marion College trailer park when we got married. Lester was the assistant pastor at College Wesleyan Church next door. After moving to Tipton, Rachel taught school with Lester and Barb and enjoyed their friendship. Lester was always so gracious and kind. Barb and Doug, may the Lord wrap you in His comforting love as you grieve, but full of hope as we await the resurrection.
