Paul H. Koors

 -

Paul H. Koors, 92 of Indianapolis and formerly of Tipton died at 2:35 a.m. on Friday, January 6, 2017 at home. He was born in Tipton on March 6, 1924 to John & Florence (Gall) Koors. Paul graduated from Tipton High School in 1942 and was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Tipton.

Paul had a contagious smile that would light up a room. He used his charm to steal the heart of Mary Joan Hellmann, his bride of 66 years, whom he married June 3, 1950. Their love grew to include six children, John Koors and wife Mary, Racine, Wisconsin, Kevin Koors and wife Mary, Lafayette, Steve Koors and wife Joy, Lizton, Mary Rice and husband Mike, Indianapolis, Maria King and husband Jeff, LaGrange, Jane Watson and husband Kevin, Indianapolis; 23 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Paul has two sisters, Rosina Vawter, Lafayette and Doris Owings, Burbank, California; a brother, Carl Koors and wife Ina Mae, Sheridan along with two sisters-in-law, Georgia Koors, Tipton and Rosie Koors, Marion. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Leo Koors, Frank Koors, and Donald “Duck” Koors.

Paul was passionate about farming and never missed an opportunity to utilize his engineering intellect to modify and improve his equipment. His work ethic was an inspiration to those who knew him. He retired from farming in 1990, leaving more time and energy for bowling, playing pool, and euchre. He was a man of great faith and was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Tipton until he moved to LaGrange, Indiana in 2010 and joined St. Joseph Catholic Church, LaGrange.

A funeral mass for Paul will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 9 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Elwood with Revs. Martin Day, David Hellmann, and Keith Hosey presiding. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery, Tipton. Visitation will be from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. Sunday at Young-Nichols Funeral Home, Tipton where a short prayer service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to Knights of Columbus, 222 S. Independence Street, Tipton, Indiana 46072.

  1. Remembering the good family times together, also the work times preparing Joy and Steve’s new yard. Nancy and I will miss you Paul.

  2. Where in the world does a person begin when speaking of Uncle Paul. I have so many memories of good times with this man. The first time Aunt Mary Joan brought him to our house my sibs and I fell in love with him (he always brought candy and gum, the quickest way to a kids heart), I remember the announcement that he and Mary Joan were going to get married, One of the best days of my life. Going to the farm was so much fun, my brothers and I probably ran 10 pounds off of each hog on each visit and this man never said a word.
He and dad arguing about who would buy lunch, Dad loved him. So many memories come to mind I could write a book. What an addition to the Hellmann family. Each time I lose one of my Aunts and Uncles living in Colorado gets tough, I so wish I could be there for every funeral. Love to my dear Aunt Mary Joan and all of my cousins. You are all in my prayers and in my heart.

  3. Dear Koors Family,

I remember Paul’s wonderful smile and a man of few words. He loved his family so much, He will be greatly missed by all .
But he is with the Lord and probably bringing his wonderful smile and insite in heaven right now.RIP Paul

I remember Paul and Mary Joan worshipping so often with us at St. Joseph Center, visiting Sr. Catherine and holding the Hellman Family Reunions. My prayer and sympathy are with all of you, especially Mary Joan.

My prayers , condolences, and heartfelt sympathy and those of all the Sisters of St Joseph from Tipton who now live at our Nazareth Center. Mary Joan, I believe that the Koors and Hellmann families have been part of our CSJ family for longer than many of us Sisters have been. What a tremendous blessing for us all! Paul’s obituary is beautiful… capturing the heart and soul of your quiet, strong , and faithful husband. With our prayers come our gratitude for years of friendship and shared ministry to the dear neighbor within and around us. We are with you all in spirit as you lay Paul to rest. Our love and prayers, S. Jeanne Marie

  6. Sr. Dorothy Gall

My prayers are with you, Mary Joan and Family. As you know, Florence was my Dad’s sister. So I have known Paul for a long time.
When Mary Joan became an Associate, they were present at many Associate functions.
    Love,
    Sr. Dorothy

  7. Kevin, Sincerest Condolences to you and each of your family members. One wayward farm boy to another who understands, even though I do not know Paul, but in working with you for a few years, only shows the greatness of the man as being passed onto and being lived each day by you and your family members. May God give comfort and solace to you and your dad’s loved ones, in the faithful knowledge of his destination in heaven.

  8. Amy (Dowler) Garrison

I have so many wonderful memories of Paul from my childhood as he was a frequent visitor to my Mom’s restaurant in Hobbs (Dowler’s).
Over the years Paul & Mary Joan became good friends of my parents, Bill & Judy Dowler (Tolle) and I was blessed by many funny stories told by Paul & the other members of the Hobb’s Coffee Club. I cherish these memories & hold them close to my heart.

My deepest condolences go out to the entire Koors family! 💖
