Richard Dale “Dick” Smith, 89 of Tipton went to be with his Lord and Savior at 8:57 p.m. on Thursday, October 26, 2017 at I.U. Health Tipton Hospital.  He was born on September 13, 1928 in Elwood, Indiana to Bethel & Edith (Dever) Smith.  On June 26, 1948 he married the love of his life, Martha Stafford of Tipton and she survives.

Richard worked at GM-Delco Remy, Anderson in production control for 37 years before retiring in 1987.  He was a member of First Church of the Nazarene in Anderson, serving on the church board and as a Sunday school teacher.  Richard also worked with the Visitation Ministry at the church.  He was a member of the Art Association of Madison County and loved to paint.  Richard attended Elwood High School, but left school at the age of 17 to join the United States Navy to serve his country.

He was a devoted husband, wonderful father and grandfather.  He loved spending time with his family and friends.  He never failed to share his love for the Lord and faith in Jesus.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Martha; three children, Michael D. Smith and wife Anita, Decatur, Indiana, Carolyn J. Swan and husband Steve, Tipton, James R. Smith and wife Susan, Nashville, Tennessee; three grandchildren, Justin Swan and wife Jill, Clint Swan and wife Meghan, Stefanie Parton and husband Troy; eight great-grandchildren, Lukas, Mylan, and Nolan Swan, Liam, Abigail, and Norah Swan, Lucy and Annabelle Parton.  He was preceded in death by a brother, Don Smith and a sister, Eva Mae Graves.

His funeral will be at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 1, at Oasis Community Church, 600 Fairgrounds Road, Tipton, with Pastor Gary Cable and Pastor Kim Drake presiding.  Burial will follow in Elwood City Cemetery with Military Honors. Visitation will be from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 31 and from 12:00 noon until time of the service on Wednesday, all at the church. Young-Nichols Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
