Richard Lee “Dick” Fernung, 83 of Tipton died at 11:55 p.m. on Sunday, December 2, 2018 at Miller’s Merry Manor in Tipton.  He was born on August 31, 1935 in Elwood, Indiana to Fred L. Fernung & Leona J. (Hinds) Fernung Francis.  On June 25, 1955 he married Marilyn S. Cummins and she preceded him in death on January 27, 2018.  He is reunited with his wife of 63 years, Marilyn and his Lord and Savior.

He was a Tipton County farmer most of his life.  Richard also worked 19 years as a welder/millwright at Ex-Cello Corporation and at Chrysler, before retiring in 1975.  Richard graduated from Tipton High School in 1953 and served in the United States Marine Corps after high school.  He was a member of Tipton Masonic Lodge.  Richard served on the Tipton Community School Board, Soil and Water Conservation Board, and ASCS Board.

Richard is survived by two children, Scott Fernung and wife Cindy, Tipton, and Cindy Lundin and husband Brian, Kokomo; seven grandchildren, Ashley Berg and husband Josh, Lindsay Reynolds and husband Brandon, Adam Fernung and wife Jenny, Ryan Fernung and wife Kristina, Nathaniel Lundin, Melody Lundin, and Zachary Lundin and wife Adrienne; a half-brother, Lloyd Lee Fernung and wife Sheri, Greenwood, Indiana; a step-sister, Patty (Francis) Phares and husband John, Frederick, Maryland; 12 great-grandchildren, Madeline, Kaitlyn, Lauren, Autumn, Shelby, Oliver, Alexis, Ayden, Maysie, Brayden, Jazmine, and Anthony.  He was preceded in death by a grandson, Brent Gaiser.

Dick’s funeral will be at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 6 at Young-Nichols Funeral Home with Dr. Garey Miller presiding. Burial with military rites will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Tipton.  Visitation will also be on Thursday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.

  1. THE GUY THAT TAUGHT ME A LOT. HIM AND MARILYN ALWAYS TREATED ME GREAT. I VERY MUCH ENJOYED WORKING AND LEARNING FROM DICK. WAS A GREAT MAN. WILL BE MISSED BY MANY. AN INVENTOR OF GREAT THINGS. I WILL ALWAYS TREASURE MEMORIES WITH “KING RICHARD “.
