Thomas William Smith

March 1, 1945 — December 3, 2023

Thomas William Smith, 78 of Greentown died Sunday, December 3, 2023 at his residence where he was surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Kokomo on March 1, 1945 to Fay William and Mildred Irene (Phifer) Smith. Thomas met the love of his life Diana Carol Vawter and they were married on February 23, 1968; she survives.

Tom worked at Chrysler Corporation for nearly 35 years where he was involved in fixing parts in the salvage department, retiring in January of 1998. He was a longstanding member of the Normanda Christian Church where he served as a deacon, elder and trustee. His mechanical background and talent helped him to perform many routine maintenance functions and repairs at the church. Tom was very proud of the 1930 Dodge Coupe he restored and would show it often. Tom also worked as a farmer and in his spare time he enjoyed antique tractors, a nice hobby for tinkering with the past. Tom and Diana enjoyed many trips to the lake house with family and friends. An important part of Tom’s life revolved around his family as he always loved spending time with them. Tom also served his country in the Indiana National Guard.

Survivors include his wife Diana; sons Mark William Smith and Terry Matthew Smith and wife Kelly. He has two siblings, Jon Haven Smith and Kathleen Elain Wolfe. Grandchildren include Daniele Smith, Ashleigh Scoles, Kirsti Smith, Eva Smith, Trenton Smith and Ian Smith.

Funeral services will be on Friday, December 8, at 10:00 a.m. at Young-Nichols Funeral Home with Revs. Denny Stevenson and Steve Brown presiding. Burial with military honors will follow at Tetersburg Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
