Carolyn S. “Sue” Fox (formerly Smith and Larson), age 88, passed away on April 5, 2026, in Kokomo, Indiana. A Tipton native who called Anderson home for decades, Sue eventually returned to her roots in Tipton for her final years. She was a woman of deep faith, tireless curiosity, and an unwavering devotion to her family.
Born February 15, 1938, in Tipton to Hugh and Lena (Meyer) Smith, Sue was the oldest of five children and learned early on the importance of family and hard work. After graduating from Tipton High School in 1956, she embarked on a lifelong pursuit of knowledge, earning her Bachelor’s degree from Purdue University and a Master’s degree from Ball State University.
Sue dedicated her career to the education of others teaching the entire county how to sew at Tipton Middle School. Her passion for the classroom never truly faded; she continued to serve as a substitute teacher well into her 80s, impacting generations of students.
Family meant everything to Sue, and being a mom and grandma were her absolute favorite roles. She loved gathering the family any chance she could get. Sue remarried later in life to Richard Fox of Anderson. They spent many years traveling and participating in engine shows until his passing in 2007. Following his death, Sue embraced her "travel bug" with renewed vigor. Her adventures took her across the United States and to six continents. More importantly, she used her travels to serve the Lord, participating in mission work in both Africa and India. When she wasn't globe-trotting, Sue was a fixture in her community. She was an active member of Emanuel Lutheran Church, Madison County Extension Homemakers, Tipton County Retired Teachers Association, and Sigma Kappa Sorority.
In her downtime, she could be found gardening, quilting, hunting for treasures at garage sales, or tending to her cats. A devoted Purdue Boilermaker, Sue was known for giving her signature "double thumbs up" to anyone she spotted wearing the old gold and black.
Sue is survived by her siblings: Steve (Elsa) Smith, Peggy (Bob) Bierer, and Linda (Jim) Caylor; her three children: Melanie Larson, Jim (Kathy) Larson, and Lory (Michael) Tulley; and her beloved grandchildren: Adam Etheridge, Andy (Amy) Chilafoe, Sarah “Sally Belle” Chilafoe, Kyle (Alexy) Etheridge, and Katrina “Katie Lou” Larson. She also leaves behind several precious great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Hugh and Lena Smith; her husband, Richard Fox; her sister, Jane Faller; and her granddaughter, Jaclyn Larson.
Sue’s funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 11 at the Emanuel Lutheran Church with Rev Dr. Robb Roloff presiding and burial to follow in Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday, April 10, from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 10:00 until the time of the service, all at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Emanuel Lutheran Church, 1385 S. St. Rd. 19, Tipton, Indiana, 46072.
Young-Nichols Funeral Home is honored to assist the Fox family in their time of need. Online condolences for Sue’s family may be left on her obituary page at www.young-nichols.com.
The family takes comfort in knowing Sue has embarked on her next and greatest adventure with Jesus.
