Stanley Rector Friend age 86, passed away on Saturday, July 15, 2023 at his home in Tipton. He was born March 1, 1937 in Jefferson Township in Tipton. His parents were John and Mary (Rector) Friend.
Stan graduated from Kempton High School in 1955 where he played point guard and ran track for the Jefferson Yankees. He developed a strong work ethic working on the family farm and purchased his first farm of 135 acres not long after graduating high school. He eventually went to work for Pioneer Corn Company full-time and had a 44-year career there finishing as the manager of the Sizing Lab. He occasionally reminded his children that he drew a paycheck from Pioneer for 75 years which started when he was nine years old detasseling corn, later working part-time, then full time and all the way through his retirement. Stan served in the Indiana National Guard.
Stan will be remembered by many as dependable, hardworking, enjoyable to be around and a disposition that reflected his last name perfectly. He enjoyed seeing his friends at the American Legion especially these last few years.
He is survived by his children, Scott (Carolyn) Friend, Sam (Amy) Friend, Shay Dell, Chip (Nicole) Friend and Christy (Jeremy) Perrin. He had 10 grandchildren, Shawn (Megan) Friend, Kayla (Nick) Parr, Lindsay Friend, Nathan Friend, Brody Dell, Grace Friend, Layla Friend, Carter Friend, Bailey Perrin and Maliya Perrin. He also had five great-grand children. All of his family lives in Tipton County. Stan is also survived by his sister, Katherine “Tootie” Freeman. He was preceded in death by a son Shawn and a brother, John “Bud” Friend.
Private family services were held to honor Stan’s life. Young-Nichols Funeral Home assisted the Friend family with Stan’s arrangements. Memorial contributions in memory of Stan may be made to the Boys & Girls Club of Tipton County, 341 W. Jefferson, Suite B, Tipton, Indiana, 46072.
