Charles “Pete” Alley, 93 of Elwood passed away at home on Wednesday, May 24, 2023. He was born in Tipton County on March 25, 1930 to John & Dessie (Trimble) Alley. Pete’s father, John was a proud WWI veteran. On September 20, 1952 he married Jeannine Songer and she preceded him in death on May 25, 2011. The couple enjoyed 58 years of marriage together raising a family.

Pete worked hard his whole life. His work day would start early morning at the farm. After working most of the day at the farm, he would then go to the factory in the afternoon, working late into the night. Pete worked at Inland Guide Lamp in Anderson for 36.5 years. He was a member of the Tipton Austin Lodge #128, 32nd degree Mason.

Pete was also a member of United Auto Workers Local 663, the Tipton County Shrine Club and a member of the Scottish Rite. Pete spent many hours and was well known for cooking ham and beans for the Shriners’ tent at the Pork Festival. He also cooked ham and beans for many other organizations. He was very helpful and supportive of good causes throughout the community and enjoyed helping. Pete formerly attended the Curtisville Christian Church.

He is survived by his children, Vickie (Alley) Cripe and husband Bill Cripe of Curtisville, John Alley and wife Bonnie of Tipton, Greg Alley and wife Debbie of Curtisville; 10 grandchildren, Leora Cripe, Tipton, Wade Cripe of Fairmount, Marty Cripe and wife Suzanne of Curtisville, Quincy Henderson and husband Craig of Sharpsville, Joshua Alley and wife Amy of Bloomington, Jena Welker and husband Steve of Greencastle, Andy Alley and wife Jessie of Fort Polk, Louisiana, Devan Spaulding and husband Jonathan of Tipton County, Wendy Thomas and husband Steve of Indiana and Kala Leyk of Tipton.

Pete is also survived by 21 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, Chris Altherr of Tipton and a brother-in-law, Richard Coulter of Plainfield, Indiana.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Tina (Alley) Altherr; siblings, James Alley, a veteran of WWII and wife Mary, Thomas Alley, a veteran of WWII and wife Jean, Jean Ann Day and husband Norman, and Martha Coulter; a granddaughter, Turonda Cripe.

The family would like to thank Elara Caring. The agency and the employees that worked in the home were extremely helpful and caring.

Pete’s memorial service will be at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, June 2 at Curtisville Christian Church, 737 N 600 East, Elwood, Indiana.  The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. on Friday until time of the service. Pete will be buried beside Jeannine in Curtisville Cemetery.

Donations in memory of Pete may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children Attn: Office of Development, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL, 33607.

  5. John, Greg and Vicki, I am so sorry for your loss. He was a Great man. My dad always spoke highly of Pete. They were good friends growing up. May God comfort you all.
