George W. Kemper

George William Kemper, 94, Carmel, died at 10:53 a.m., on January 4, 2023 at Copper Trace Care in Westfield. He had lived in Tipton County most of his life and from 1990-2008 in Mission, Texas. He was born on September 25, 1928, in Tipton County to William Nimrod Kemper and Nellie Mae (Ramseyer) Kemper. On March 16, 1947, he married Annabelle Warner, who preceded him in death.

George was a 1946 graduate of Tipton High School and was a member of the varsity basketball team and was named Outstanding Athlete of the Year his senior year. George had membership in the Sons of the American Revolution. (Tilman Kemper 4/11/1759  to 12/03/1836, was his patriot).

He retired after 35 years of driving a school bus for Tipton Community School Corporation and after 15 years as the owner of The South Pole Drive-in in Tipton. George had also worked for JC Penney Company in Tipton and Lima, Ohio, Carrol’s Men Store in Tipton, and Johns Grain Company in Hobbs. In the small amount of spare time he had, he enjoyed bowling on a league which won the league championship in 1967-1968 and again 1973-1974.

He is survived by his two children, Ronald Joe Kemper of Indianapolis and Kay Elaine Garcia and spouse Rene of Strongsville, Ohio; two grandsons, Anthony Wayne Strong and wife Dulcy, Parker, Colorado, and John Tilman Kemper, Indianapolis, one step-grandson, Michael Garcia and three great-grandsons, Trent Riley Kemper, Houston, Texas and Austin and Logan Strong, Parker, Colorado.

He was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters, Ned Kemper of Windfall (Mary Esther Hinds), Betty Kemper Beach, Tipton County (Verl Beach), and Dorothy Kemper Wilburn (Robert Wilburn), Warsaw, Indiana; one grandson, Joseph Alan Kemper and one step-grandson, James Garcia.

George’s funeral will be at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, January 9 at Young – Nichols Funeral Home, with Pastor Brian Cooper presiding and burial to follow at Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Monday.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Tipton High School Athletic Department, 619 S. Main Street, Tipton, Indiana, 46072.

George’s family would like to thank the medical staff at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis and the wonderful staff at Copper Trace Care in Westfield. They are the best!
