Shirley J. Hopper

Shirley J. Hopper, 89 of Elwood, died on Thursday, September 29, 2022 at Miller’s Merry Manor in Tipton. She was born on July 11, 1933 in Tipton to Samuel & Grace (Boles) Ashpaugh. On August 7, 1950 she married Robert R. Hopper and he survives. The couple enjoyed an amazing 72 years of marriage together, loving each other and raising a family.

She was a housewife and stay at home mom. Shirley was always busy, tending to the house and keeping up with the kids. She also enjoyed sewing and made many wonderful items for her family. Shirley also liked to help out at the Women’s Ministry at the church.

She is survived by her husband, Robert; three children, Dennis Hopper of Arcadia, Mark Hopper and wife Sondra of Westfield, Gail Hopper of Pendleton; three siblings, Bill Ashpaugh and wife Nancy of Noblesville, Kay Kerchival and husband Max of Westfield, Lois Stoops and husband Larry of Franklin, Indiana; 14 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.

Shirley is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Dee Ashpaugh and Sonjia Ashpaugh both of Westfield. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Samuel Ashpaugh and David Ashpaugh.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, October 5 at 2:00 p.m. at Young-Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. Matt Flenar presiding. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will also be on Wednesday from Noon until time of the service at the funeral home.
