Charlie E. Jones

 -

Charlie E. Jones, 84 of Windfall passed away at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 22, 2023 at home while surrounded by his family. Charlie was born on December 22, 1938 at home in Tipton County. His parents were Delver & Irene (Bagley) Jones. Charlie and Arleda Wood were united in marriage on July 14, 1958 and they were married for 55 years until her passing on December 6, 2013.

Charlie worked at Chrysler in Kokomo, first as a job setter and then before retirement he was an inspector. He graduated from Windfall High School in 1957 and was a proud “Dragon” playing basketball, track and baseball. Later in life he played a lot of golf and he still played basketball, usually at the Kokomo Armory.

He attended Windfall Christian Church with his family. Charlie and Arleda used to coach their daughters’ softball teams together. He loved being outdoors fishing and hunting. He enjoyed many games of pool with family and friends. Charlie was very proud of how he maintained his property with several people using it for photo shoots and weddings over the years. He kept his lawn immaculate. Some of the family said that his home was their favorite place on earth.

Survivors include his two daughters, Tammera Ford and husband Kenneth, Tipton and Cheryl Richter and husband Brad of Fortville; one brother, Donnie Jones and wife Sharon, English, Indiana; one sister, Kay Clark of Windfall and a sister-in-law, Francis Jones of Greentown. Charlie is also survived by three grandchildren, Luke Richter, Jessica Rees and her husband Josh, and Kasie Ford; one great-granddaughter, Charlie June Rees and five step-great-grandchildren, Aiden, Joelle, Elijah, Landon and Kaia Rees.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Heidi Finch and three brothers, Delver Jones, Jr., Virgil Jones and Denver Jones.

Charlie deeply loved his family and enjoyed every minute he got to spend with them. In keeping with Charlie’s wishes, a graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 4 at Brookside Cemetery in Windfall with burial to follow. We are so sorry to hear of Uncle Charlie’s passing. He was such a kind & fun uncle. We enjoyed spending time with him in his back yard last fall & reminiscing of our past adventures with him while we took pictures of our youngest grandson. He will truly be missed by many. If you need anything, please call.
Our thoughts & prayers are with you.
    Love, Jim & Christie

Dear Tam and Cheryl, I am so sorry to hear about Charlie, but I bet Art and Heidi are sure happy to be with him again. When I think of Charlie, I always see him in my mind’s eye chipping golf balls in the yard around the house. I also remember running into their bedroom early in the morning with a tick stuck on my arm and Charlie using his lighter to get it to release. So random, I’ve been by their place several times recently due to the detour on 213 and it looks as beautiful as i remembered. So many of my best childhood memories happened there. Much love to you and all of the Jones/Wood families. Dawn (Smith) VanBibber

  5. “Charlie” was a very special guy and I will always remember his great laughter and smile. There ‘s more to being a family than just being born into it! And we are family and our loss is huge! But I know Charlie is happy being with his treasured loved ones who have passed before. He could have never asked for his daughters and spouses who truely loved and cared for him day in and day out! Blessings and hugs to his immediate families and my love to all!!
He will never be forgotten! 💔

Condolences to the family on your loss. Some of my fondest memories growing up are playing softball for Charlie and Arleda. Will always treasure those times!

  7. When I think of Uncle Charlie, I will remember that unique and infectious laugh, but I will never forget his competitive spirit.
I first had the opportunity to witness that competitive spirit when I was a boy and Charlie and Donnie were playing independent league basketball at the Kokomo Armory and the Kokomo YMCA. I used to tag along with Donnie to those games and let’s just say the games were often very rugged and physical on the court and sometimes just as rough and physical trying to get back to your car after the game. I quickly learned you didn’t mess with the Jones brothers on or off the court and Charlie always looked out for everyone.
Later in life I again witnessed Charlie’s competitive spirit on the golf course. He was constantly tinkering with his clubs, especially his putter, to try and get the edge on the boys at the Tipton Municipal Golf Course. He loved to compete on the golf course and take a little money off the likes of Charlie Smith, Danny Shields, Clifford King, his brother Donnie and me!!! If Charlie was playing you knew it was going to be a battle until the last shot was struck.
In recent years I didn’t have the opportunity to see Charlie very often, because we lived in California but whenever we were home and had the chance Donnie and I would go down to Charlie’s to play pool. As soon as Charlie picked up the pool cue the competitive juices kicked in and it was game on. I really enjoyed those evenings playing pool in his custom built for pool Man Cave.
When I got the news of Charlie’s illness, I had no doubt that his competitive juices would once again be ignited to fight this disease with everything he had because I had seen that spirit in him so many times. I believe his competitive spirit to the end is an example to all of us to never give up and always give everything you have, to whatever you are doing.
It was an honor to be a small part of your life’s journey and witness a life well lived.
Uncle Charlie-You fought the good fight, finished the race and may you rest in peace.

The first time I saw Charlie I thought he was some kind of giant. Of course, I was 3 and sitting in our kitchen at the Wood farm. I have no memory of ever not having him in our lives. Frankly, I was scared of him lol. I loved him dearly and my sis and girls. Their home was my home. Their girls my girls. Hard to see him sick so used to seeing him busy in the yard and what a yard.! My parents I know are so proud of the way he cared for my sister and girls and his beautiful home. I know I sure am. Rest my brother kiss Art and Heidi for me. Till we meet again. Your Connie Sue
