 -

Kathryn “Katie” Ann Edwards Schmith died Tuesday, December 19, 2023 at 4:04 a.m. She was born April 3, 1929 in Decatur, Indiana to Paul and Jennie (Wechter) Edwards. On June 17, 1950 she married Joe Schmith. Together they raised their family in Tipton. When Joe retired in 1992, they moved to Sun City Center, Florida where they lived for 14 years. In 2006, they moved back to Indiana so that Katie would be close to family upon Joe’s death (2007).

Katie devoted her life to her family and service of others. She was an active member of St. John the Baptist parish in Tipton and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel parish in Carmel. She was a member of Delta Gamma sorority at Indiana University and a member of Tri Kappa philanthropic sorority in Tipton. When she wasn’t running her kids around, you would likely find her on the golf course, on her bike, working in her yard, or helping others. She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who brought great joy to her life.

Survivors include two sons, Tom Schmith (Jody) of Carmel, Jim Schmith (Teresa) of Carmel, and a daughter Mary Ann Keck (Richard) of Fishers; eight grandchildren, Renee Schmith Phares (Tim), Jamie Schmith Havens (Ben), Elizabeth Keck Kissel (Jay), Joe Keck (Megan), Ross Keck (Michelle), Brian Schmith, Jenna Schmith Funk (Jeremy) and Joe Schmith; and 15 great-grandchildren, Ty, Kate, Elle and Reese Phares, Noah, Dylan, Anna and Addison Havens, Bryce, Lydia and Lexi Kissel, Andrew and William Keck, Zoe Funk and Easton Slansky; one brother, Steve (LuAnn) Edwards, Kokomo.

The family extends tremendous gratitude to Grand Brook Memory Care of Fishers for their loving care of Katie.

Funeral services will be held at Our Lady of Mt Carmel Catholic Church on Friday, December 22. The visitation will be at 9:30 a.m. followed by a eulogy at 10:45 a.m. and a funeral mass at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday at St. John’s Cemetery in Tipton.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Merciful Help Center at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. Checks can be sent to Merciful Help Center, 1045 West 146th St., Suite A, Carmel, Indiana, 46032.

What a distinguished and delightful woman Katie was all her life. She was full of cheer for everyone. Katie and Joe lived next door to my Grandmother and Grandfather Hull. And they also lived near my folks, Ward and Zola Riffe, in Sun City Center. Florida. And my parents lived next door to Joi’s parents, Phil and Esther. So our families were always so very closely connected. Rest in peace, Dear Katie. At long last you are once again in Joe’s arms. And may that comfort your family in this time of grief at your passing.
