Martha Lucille Lawrence

 -

Martha Lucille Lawrence, 96 of Windfall went to heaven on Saturday, April 22, 2023 at home surrounded by her family.  She was born on December 2, 1926 in Dexter, Missouri to Albert & Mary (Swinger) Creed.  She married Harold Lawrence on May 26, 1942 and he passed away on May 11, 2005.  Harold was truly her soul mate.  The couple enjoyed just shy of 63 years of marriage.

She started school at age four alongside her sisters in a one room school in Missouri and graduated at the age of 14.  Lucille was a lifelong member at First Salem Church, where she taught Sunday school for 70 years, until she retired at the age of 90.  Lucille was a strong Christian and a strong lady. At a very young age she started picking cotton to help her family.

She was playing baseball in Dexter when she met the love of her life at a game. After the couple had moved to Indiana, both she and her husband worked for Mitchell Farms for several years.  Lucille also worked at John Barn’s grocery store in Windfall.  She volunteered her time and talents at the food bank in the Methodist Church in Windfall for several years. She enjoyed helping raise her two grandchildren, gardening, and baking.  Lucille always had an answer ready when you asked how she was feeling today and that answer was always, “With my hands!”

She was always knitting and made several quilts to pass along to the family. You could find her every summer in her garden, making sure not a single weed dared to show up, and heaven help the poor dandelions that did.  Not a single one ever survived living in her yard for long.

She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Ann Lawrence of Windfall; grandchildren, Cary Castner, Melissa Castner Myers and husband David; four great-grandchildren, Micheal Myers, Paige Myers, Megan Main and husband Matt, Taylor Castner.  Lucille is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Walter Creed; two sisters, Chloteel Middleton and Thelma Lindsay; one grandson, Kenneth Allen Castner and a son-in-law, Manley Castner.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 Noon on Saturday, April 29 at Young-Nichols Funeral Home with Pastor Jim Bradley presiding.  Burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery, Windfall.  Visitation will be on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 50 East 91st Street, Suite 100, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46240.
