Elizabeth Marie “Betty'' Ertel Moore

Elizabeth Marie “Betty'' Ertel Moore was born on December 12, 1917 at home to Edward and Josephine (Cook) Ertel at 455 N. East Street, Tipton, Indiana. She was named after her maternal grandmother. Betty was preceded in death by her parents.

Betty was the oldest of five children. Her siblings were Mark (Artilla) Ertel, Rita (Robert) Cage, Joan (Jack) Stodgell and all preceded her in death. Her youngest brother Jim (Chick) Ertel of West Lafayette, Indiana survives.

Betty graduated from Saint John's Elementary School in May of 1931. She graduated from Saint Joseph's Academy in 1935. The following year she attended Tipton High School to receive chemistry and science classes and graduated in 1936 with her brother Mark. Phi Beta Psi Sorority gave her a scholarship for nursing at St. Vincent's School of Nursing in Indianapolis. Betty became an RN in August of 1939. She did private nursing at St. Vincent's until the attack on Pearl Harbor, in December of 1941. Betty was able to attend classes at St. Mary's College in South Bend, IN and served as the school nurse while earning her Bachelor of Science in January of 1945. She taught student nurses at St. John Hickey's Hospital in Anderson, IN until 1945.

On June 22, 1946 Betty married Frank Bradley Moore in a double wedding ring ceremony with her sister Joan and Jack Stodgell. With five children arriving in four years, Betty became a full time homemaker. She is survived by her children William Howard (Rebecca) Moore of Indianapolis, Rose Marie Cherven (John) of Anchorage, Alaska, Barbara Ann Dell of Tipton, and Monica Frances Moore of Tipton. She was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Edward (Julia) Moore of South Bend. Frank owned and operated Moore Bros. Chevrolet Dealership in Tipton.

Betty and Frank celebrated 50 years of marriage in 1996. During her married years, Betty was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and served as President of St. Joseph's Academy Alumnae, President of the Altar and Rosary Societies, and the first woman President of St. John's Parish Council.

Her grandchildren are Travis (Tara) Moore of Indianapolis, Nathan Moore of San Jose, CA, Dr. Jared Moore of Washington, D.C., Jason Pawluk of Soldotna, Alaska, Matthew (Renata) Pawluk of San Diego, CA, Carrie Christman of Carmel, IN, Christie (Bret) Crites of South Bend, and Michael Dell of Indianapolis. Betty has five great grandchildren: Nicholas Crites, Elizabeth, Emily, and Erick Christman and Julia Pawluk.

Betty was an amazing wife and mother with a kind and giving heart. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

The funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 6 at St, John the Baptist Catholic Church, Tipton with Rev. Dennis Goth presiding. Burial will follow at St. John's Cemetery, Tipton. Visitation will be from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. Sunday at Young-Nichols Funeral Home with the Wake Service at 5:00 p.m. and Rosary to follow.
