Services were held on Friday, April 26 for family & close friends of Jack L. Brown, 94 of Kokomo, and formerly of Windfall & Greentown. Jack died at 8:12 p.m. on Sunday, April 21, 2019 at Wellbrooke in Kokomo. Rev. Paul Gearhardt presided and Jack was buried in Brookside Cemetery, Windfall, with military honors. It was Jack’s wish that the services be private.

Jack was born in Tipton County on November 15, 1924 to Arch & Laura (Castor) Brown. He married Martha Havens on May 6, 1944 and she preceded him in death on May 3, 2006.

Jack graduated from Windfall High School in 1944 and attended Ball State University for one year following his return from military service.

Jack was an Army veteran serving during World War II in the 87th Infantry “Golden Acorn” Division during the Northern French Campaign & the German Campaign. He was assigned to a 60MM mortar team that participated in the Battle of the Bulge in Neuenstein, Germany. During that battle he was seriously wounded and carried shrapnel in his back the remainder of his life.

He was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, European-African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and 2 Battle Stars.

Jack had worked as a Metallurgical Technician at Stellite (Cabot) in Kokomo, retiring in 1982. He was a member of the Windfall Christian Church, Greentown American Legion and the 87th Infantry Division.

Jack had a love of sports, especially IU basketball & Notre Dame football and any sport that his grandchildren & great-grandchildren participated in. Regardless of where he lived, he had to have multiple sports channels and enjoyed watching Gunsmoke & Perry Mason. Over the years, he and Martha enjoyed traveling/cruising throughout the United States and Germany to attend family & military reunions. Jack would say that one of his greatest blessings was his family & the freedoms we as a country enjoy every day.

Survivors include two children, Sid Brown, Carmel, and Ellen (Greg) Hoback of Kokomo; three grandchildren, Leigh Swartzendruber (Brian), Greentown, Jennifer (Randy) Degan, Avon and Johnathan Brown (Melissa) of Westfield; four great-grandchildren, Katherine Swartzendruber, Luke Swartzendruber, Wyatt Degan and Gwendolyn Brown.

Jack was preceded in death by one brother, Kenneth Brown, two sisters, Gretchen Weismiller & Carol Seely & a daughter-in-law Ann Brown.

Arrangements were entrusted to Young-Nichols Funeral Home, Tipton. Jack’s family would like to thank Wellbrooke and Great Lakes Hospice for their great care. Memorial contributions in Jack’s honor may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
