Carl Fowler Derr, 91, Kokomo, passed away on October 19, 2023 from Covid-19. He was born December 1, 1931 in Plainfield, Ohio, to the late Charles Wesley and Ruth (Fowler) Derr. On December 25, 1952 he was united in marriage with Ruth (Karr) Derr, and she survives.

Carl graduated from Plainfield High School in 1949 and went on to serve in the U.S. Navy aboard the ship Horace A. Bass as Electronics Technician 1st Class. After his discharge from the Navy he earned his Bachelor’s degree from Milwaukee School of Engineering and his Master’s degree from Purdue University.

He began working for Delco Radio Division of General Motors in 1957 as an Electrical Engineer. He worked in several areas during his 35-year-career including Semiconductor Military Projects, Speaker Design, and Entertainment Systems and Systems Product Assurance before retiring in 1992. After his retirement he had the opportunity to work for Anchor Advanced Products as Project Manager for the building of their new facility in Matamoris, Mexico.

Carl was known for his good sense of humor and his ability to tell a good joke. He was a member of the Elks and Moose Lodges, enjoyed bowling and golfing, playing cards, coin collecting, home improvement projects and working in his yard. Carl loved to travel and had the opportunity to travel first with the Navy and later for various projects for Delco. He enjoyed camping with family throughout the country while his children were growing up. After retiring, he and his wife, Ruth, traveled a great deal throughout the U.S. as well as many other countries.

Surviving are his wife, Ruth, children Carl K. Derr, Avon, and Susan Derr, Fort Wayne; granddaughter, Nora (Micah) Young, Galloway, OH; great-grandchildren, Nathan, Abby, Rachel, and Jubal Young, Galloway, OH; and niece, Shelley Wassem, New Philadelphia, OH. Preceeding him in death were his parents and sisters, Lois Sargent and Lorna Wassem.

A memorial service will be held at a future date. Young-Nichols Funeral Home is honored to assist the Derr family in their time of need.
