Ronald E. Sottong

 -

Ronald E. “Ronnie” Sottong, 85 of Tipton died Thursday, June 8, 2023 at 6:05 P.M. at Wellbrooke of Westfield.  He was born in Tipton County on December 20, 1937 to Joseph Earl and Mary Louise (Clark) Sottong.  He married the love of his life, Judy K. Bowers on August 21, 1960, spending over 60 years together.

Ronnie was the oldest son on the farm, excelling in 4-H and FFA.  Once he graduated, agriculture was his priority and passion, working for Pring Implement, Tebco and the Plant Food Manager for Tipton County Co-op (Co-Alliance) for 35 years with his wife Judy by his side.  His passion and work ethic inspired his three children to love agriculture and carry on to his grandchildren.  He took over his father’s position on the Farmers Mutual Insurance Company and took care of his patrons for many years.

He belonged to several organizations: the Masonic Lodge, Shriners, Odd Fellows and the Elks Lodge.  Ronnie gave back to the community serving on the Cicero Township Advisory board and the Clay County Phone Board.  In his spare time he would often catch a Purdue Basketball game and he enjoyed travelling.  He also attended several Indianapolis 500 races.

Ronald is survived by his wife Judy, children Becky Dobbins and husband Len of Noblesville, Rick Sottong of Tipton and Greg Sottong and wife Kim of Tipton.  He has 10 grandchildren, Erik and Blake Ragan, Tyler Sottong, Shelbie Sottong, Mallorie Sottong, Abby Asmus, Tucker Shelton, Ali Sottong, Lauren Carroll and Erin Zervas.  Ronnie was also blessed with 10 great-grandchildren.  Surviving siblings include Judy Martin and husband Keith of Tipton and Karen Brown and husband Vic of Tipton, sisters-in-law Joyce Sottong, Linda Sottong, Rose Rushin, Ann Powell and Linda Tragesser.

He was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law Missie, a sister Janet Burkhart and brothers Bud and Russell Sottong.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 13 at 11:00 A.M. at Young-Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. Rex Dunning presiding.  Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery.  Visitation will be Monday beginning at 3:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M.  The Austin Masonic Lodge will conduct a service beginning at 3:00 P.M.

Memorial donations may be made to the Tipton County 4-H Fair Board for facility improvements; 1200 S. Main Street. Tipton, Indiana. 46072.

Sorry to hear your passing. Been a long time since I saw you. Knew you were to be big in AG. You made it. Thoughts for your family. R.I.P. Morris Graham.

  2. Joyce and your family:

I have many happy memories of Ronnie….and Earl from my childhood. Talk about nice people! You all are in my prayers.

The best memories though are of Joyce and many of her amazing grandchildren. (I just made the connection) Joyce was my bus driver to and from Lincoln school when I was a student. She was just the best! Her grandchildren that I taught were very special.

Prayers for peace, comfort and good memories about Ronnie.

My heart goes out to you during this difficult time and the days to follow. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

  4. Judy and Family, sorry to hear about Ronnie, if I live in Indiana, I sure love to be there for you and the family. My prayer are with the whole family.

  5. May your happy memories help comfort you. My sister was a THS classmate of Ron. She and her husband, Don and Virgene McKenzie, came from Arizona to attend the Class of 55 reunions. They always talked about going to Sottong’s home and what good times they shared.
Karen Brown and the Sottong family, I send my heartfelt sympathy.
