Joyce Smith Watson Frese, 90 of Carmel passed away Wednesday, November 23, 2022 at Ascension St. Vincent in Carmel. She was born in Tipton County on July 16, 1932 to Fred and Matie (Hinkle) Smith. In 1988 Joyce married Jerry Frese; he preceded her in death in 2016.

Joyce was a member of the East 91st Street Christian Church in Indianapolis. She was very involved and always looked forward to attending services. Joyce enjoyed playing bridge, belonged to several bridge clubs over the years and was a member of Tri-Kappa Sorority. She was a 1950 graduate of Jefferson Township High School, Kempton, and attended Indiana University. She was a loving stay-at-home mother who inherited her talent for cooking from her mother, Matie. Joyce’s greatest gift to her family was her unwavering love. She made sure each of her girls, grandchildren, nieces and nephews felt her love. She would often speak of her parents and siblings, and how she would rejoice when they were all reunited.

Joyce is survived by her daughters, Cindy Lunsford, Marta Elliott and Marianne Brophy. She has six grandchildren, Sarah Grimm, Andy Lunsford, Katie Elliott, Roxie Elliott, Mac Elliott Jr. and Gannon Brophy; four great-grandchildren include Colin Lunsford, Max Lunsford, Jackson Grimm and Ella Grimm.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jerry, siblings Virginia (Smith) Hahn, Phillip H. Smith, Clyde Smith and Dr. Chub Smith.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 10 at Noon at Young-Nichols Funeral Home in Tipton. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until Noon on Saturday. Burial will be in Tetersburg Cemetery.

  1. What a Great Mother to 3 beautiful girls but that’s what the strong Smith gene gave her. She grew up with some tough brothers so she could hold her own, you can tell I liked her. She will be missed by her family and friends she had in Tipton and Carmel. Girls I’m sorry she is gone but I loved the respect you always gave your mother. RIP Joyce.
